Smarter, Greener, Healthier, Electrified Buildings for ALL

Our electrification work is centered in climate justice. United States building energy infrastructure is outdated, unhealthy and in desperate need of upgrades. We believe that frontline communities, facing the greatest environmental and economic burdens, must be prioritized.

THE CRITICAL INTERSECTIONS OF OUR WORK

Environmental Justice
Health Equity
The opportunity for everyone to be as healthy as possible. Long-standing systemic health and social inequities have put many underserved groups at increased risk of getting sick and dying from COVID-19.
Building Electrification
Converting fossil-fuel (oil, natural gas) burning buildings to a cleaner, renewables-powered electrical grid.
Cost Barriers
Access to capital remains the primary determinant as to whether a household can access the cost savings and health benefits of energy efficiency and renewables.

BUILDING ELECTRIFICATION MUST SUPPORT A JUST TRANSITION

Energy systems in low to moderate income buildings are inefficient, expensive, unhealthy and ignored as too difficult to upgrade.
We empower underserved, high-need communities with our Clean Energy Toolkit, helping make buildings greener, healthier & smarter.
COMMUNITY DRIVEN APPROACH

Community-based organizations at the forefront of our work

  • We organize Community Advisory Boards (CAB) to inform, guide and hold us accountable for the work we do to benefit the community

  • Boards are composed of neighborhood advocates, religious and community leaders,  contractors, workers and residents

  • Members join our CABs to see real change in their community and to have a say in how it’s implemented.

  • We share values and overlap in our missions—clean air, healthy homes, jobs and access in the communities we live in and serve.

TURNKEY CLEAN ENERGY TOOLKIT

We support local leaders and
advocates addressing inequities

  • BlocPower provides access to low-cost capital

  • We offer superior technical assistance on identifying the right green equipment to install in each building, as well as projected ROI

  • We connect certified local construction contractors to the projects, who affordably install and commission green equipment to specification

  • We complete comprehensive retrofits that include lead and asbestos abatement, solar and storage, weatherization, WiFi installation and additional future-proofing
CREATING ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY

We build wealth in communities we serve through clean energy, community Wi-Fi and workforce development projects.

  • We help build a diverse climate tech workforce through technical training and career development in green construction and broadband technologies

  • We create opportunities for at-risk young people through Pathways, BlocPower's Civilian Climate Corps, which focuses on communities at high risk for gun violence

  • We design and develop affordable community-owned Wi-Fi networks to bridge the digital divide in communities without full digital access

  • We see internet access and good green jobs as critical enablers for smart, healthy, and green buildings, all of which are imperative to a just energy transition

Featured Partnerships and Projects with Community Based Organizations

In partnership with New York Power Authority (NYPA) and UPROSE—a grassroots organization promoting sustainability and resiliency—BlocPower will develop Sunset Park Solar. The 685 kilowatt project will be New York City’s first cooperatively-owned community solar development and will enable 200 community solar subscribers to receive 15% savings on their monthly energy bills.
BlocPower partnered with Metro Industrial Areas Foundation (Metro IAF), a citizens’ organizing network, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to transition religious congregations and anchor institutions off of fossil fuels and prioritize outreach in disadvantaged communities. The $4 million NYSERDA award will support 80+ building owners and anchor institutions in developing a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels, and completion of 30 energy efficiency projects.
