BlocPower Advancing Building Data with $5.5MM Grant From Bezos Earth Fund

We’re thrilled to share that BlocPower received a $5.5 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund to create an open source data set and recommendation engine for 100MM+ buildings across America—the Building Data Collective

This project will prioritize facilitating and delivering environmental justice. Currently there is no publically available building data set that incorporates data on environmental justice. With the Building Data Collective, policy leaders at the federal, state and local level, as well as utilities, could more precisely customize lending, incentive and grant programs to generate greater GHG reductions for frontline communities.

Moreover, the tool would enable citizens to gather information about a property and make more informed decisions on where to live with health, efficiency, and future energy risks in mind.

BlocPower is proud to be included among the prestigious recipients in this round of grants from the Earth Fund, which is squarely focused on conserving land and sea, restoring degraded land, and advancing climate justice.

From the Press Release

Bezos Earth Fund grantees [like BlocPower] will focus their efforts on empowering community groups,  and providing relevant tools, data, and skills to access government funds for local priorities. Efforts will also be heavily focused on pursuing decarbonization projects, specifically in underserved communities. These organizations will work across the entire gradient, from the federal government to local communities, ensuring a just transition, and building a lasting force for climate and environmental justice.

"Disadvantaged communities have borne the brunt of environmental damage for too long and are key players in driving the necessary solutions," said Lauren Sánchez, Vice Chair of the Bezos Earth Fund. "With each grant we make, we are supporting leading institutions working with communities to advance climate justice efforts."
